SECURITY BLANKETS

a collaboration of: Anita Cruz-Eberhard and David Howe

In our project, images of contemporary trauma confront the traditional soft children's security blanket - provoking a disturbing cross-sensory conflict. Soft Car Bomb, Soft Drought, Soft Tornado, Soft Hazmat, Soft Border Guard for example.

Made of super plush fleece, the resulting mural-sized cozy contradictions are meant to be touched as well as seen. They challenge the security state and media infrastructures from which the images are sourced, appropriated, and physically "re-captured," confounding the positive and negative implications of the word "security."
